Let's say you get an average run of the mill first aid kit and you never use it?

How long are the items good before you have to replace them usually?

I found an army surplus first aid kit I bought in like 2003.

I doubt it is good and have thrown everything but the container away, however I wonder how long these things need to be replaced generally?
