Hybrid vehicle ?

Is a Toyota Prius or a Honda hybrid worth it or what are the downsides? I am thinking a used car with less than 70k miles for under $19k

otherwise possibly a Corolla which apparently gets around 34mpg . I want a vehicle that I can put a canoe on or cargo rack etc
